After George Steinbrenner passed away earlier this past week many have taken to singing his praise, myself included. The man was a great person and was much more caring than many even knew about. He also said things that kept the newspapers in business. He was constantly on page 6 in the NYC papers and never was short on a quote. Let’s take a look at  some of them now. Thanks Mr. Steinbrenner for the memories.

  1. Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next. -
  2. Lou Piniella- “Well George, Jesus wore his hair long he did pretty well” Mr. Steinbrenner- “come with me, (they walk across the street to the YMCA Pool) If you can walk across that water you can wear your hair anyway you want
  3. But why shouldn’t I speak out? Don’t you speak out in this country?
  4. I haven’t always done a good job, and I haven’t always been successful – but I know that I have tried.
  5. I’m really 95 percent Mr. Rogers, and only 5 percent Oscar the Grouch.’
  6. Owning the Yankees is like owning the Mona Lisa.
  7. Our team played hard, but we let our fans down. We will do better
  8. “The day I don’t want to win for New York, that’s the day I better get the hell out of the business.
  9. particularly since Sept. 11, the Yankees have come to symbolize the spirit, strength, and resilience of New York, and I am very proud of all we accomplished this year.”
  10. “When you start talking about the best team money can buy, the Red Sox have as many free agents as we do. They just didn’t pay as much.”
